Antenatal Classes

Antenatal or Prenatal classes are there to help prepare you for the birth of your child and everything it entails – labour, giving birth, early parenthood as well as many other tips. Attending Antenatal classes is also a great way of meeting other expecting parents so you can share your experiences and socialise too!

What can I expect from an antenatal class?

  • Details of medical procedures that will occur during childbirth
  • Information on the process of labour and childbirth – including pain relief choices
  • Physical and mental preparations that you can do prior to labour and childbirth
  • Fitness and relaxation techniques
  • Learn and experiment with different birth positions
  • Preparing for  life with a new baby – caring for your newborn, changes you will experience
  • Massage and breathing techniques to make childbirth more comfortable
  • Dealing with the emotions you will feel after childbirth
  • The chance to ask questions and meet other parents-to-be

There will be an antenatal class to suit you, as they are targeted with different specifics – women only, both partners, same sex partners, women who would prefer to bring a friend, teenagers and more. Check what’s available in your area, and pick the class suited to your needs.

Ask your GP for information about classes run by midwives and at your local hospital as these should be free but you will have to pay for NCT classes. Classes run by the NHS may be held in a large group and will probably be held in a hospital or a health centre. NCT classes will be more focussed as are held in smaller groups, which enables you to make friends.

Classes usually run for six to eight weeks.
